Easter

No...I did not fall off the face of the earth, although I am not sure how I went through the whole month of March in an instant. I had some unexpected things arise, such as my grandfather passing away after battling Alzheimer's, the run of the mill colds, and the general laundry and cleaning that can consume a mother. Of course there was a spring break and finally playing outside with the kids, which always makes me smile.
These Easter dresses were inspired by a need to be a little more frugal. So instead of running out to the store, and buying a reasonably priced dress, I made these for free. The idea came from here and it was simple and fast and done in an afternoon! The brown dress came from fabric I had picked up at the local thrift store and the green dress came from what I believe used to be a tablecloth, found at a garage sale. I made a matching headband for the brown dress which I think finishes it off. The girls love them and can't wait till next week, I have to admit I'm pretty happy about them too. I foresee a few more of these type of dresses for the summer.

A lady in town has asked me to make a few things for her vintage shop that is opening up in a few weeks so this is the start of my productivity. Headbands with some vintage yo-yos I purchased at an estate auction. I love when things turn out how they look in my mind!

I am having a hard time getting into crafting these past few weeks. I think the cold weather and incessant wind is making me cranky and lazy.
So just some small knitting markers I made to help me think of spring! Spring I need you to come quick before I lose all semblance of sanity!

The girls are really getting into Valentine's this year and we have some card making planned for this evening. In an effort to be a bit more frugal for class parties I opted for some homemade crayons instead of Valentine candy.
I got the crayon tutorial from here. It worked perfectly and did a nice job of using up all of our small crayon pieces.

When there are germs in the house then a lot of knitting occurs, which is a good thing now that the weather has turned colder. I'm half way through my youngest daughters hat for this winter. Because she has strawberry blond hair she looks good in turquoise and other colors that bring out her pink complexion.And nothing helps little people, and big people for that matter, feel better than some Halloween cupcakes.

I've been out of sorts the last couple of weeks with transitioning back into school but yesterday I was finally sat down and worked on my son's quilt. And once I got going I was actually able to finish everything but the binding. Yes, yes it is over two years late but I think definitely still in the acceptable time range, ie he's under 18.This is only my second attempt at quilting with my machine as I usually quilt by hand. And I'd have to say it wasn't as scary as I thought it would be. All in all not a bad day's work. I'd feel a lot more relaxed if it wasn't for my other sewing project waiting in the foreground.

I had my first market last night and since a lot of you have seen my in progress items I thought I'd give a glimpse of the final product.

Over the weekend I found a cute little metal stand that fit perfectly in my sewing room for all my girls stuff. So this week my oldest has been diligently organizing and arranging her already growing sewing supplies at the tender age of five. My heart swells to see her work and it was a very peaceful day as we worked side by side in silence intent on making our own spaces beautiful.

My creative space has been more on the thrift side of things this week. A lot of thrifting, cleaning and picture taking for the shop. I found some great things, some to keep and some to sell. I found this great embroidered pillowcase I'm going to turn into a dress for one of the girls from the pattern in Sewing Green. (Excuse the wrinkles, ironing only occurs when absolutely necessary.)
And some shop finds.I love wind up clocks!A very retro filing box.

Now that the husband is home all the time there's much more play and outdoor fun with a lot less computer and sewing time. It's a good compromise for the summer. And it's finally gotten hot enough that the swimsuits have come out of hiding.

I actually was able to finish some projects this week and I'm hoping my productivity heads into the weekend. It seems like when I have a lot to do, i.e. sew for market in a month, I tend to do every other sewing project available first. It's my own little way of procrastinating.Finished up a shirt for my boy from Weekend Sewing. I love how it turned out. It's a little big which means longer wearing time. I also love the fabric. So soft and perfect for clothing.


Finished the baby cocoon I wrote about in my last post. The yarn is really bright and cheery, perfect for a February baby.

Kirsty over at Kootoyoo has a new item this week to hide a heart in the creative space. There is a heart in my space but unfortunately it turns out I'm not very creative when it comes to hiding. As a child I was always found fairly quickly when playing hide and seek. So search for the heart but I don't think you'll have to search very hard. :)

After the big giveaway last week I finally was able to get back to some fun sewing for me and the kids. I planned on trying to make a dress out of the book in my last post but I decided I did not have the patience to figure out a Japanese pattern so I opted for the Weekend Sewing book instead. I traced, pinned and cut and now have several projects waiting to be sewn up. I finished the Huck Finn pants last night and I love the fabric. Unfortunately, my husband wasn't as thrilled with the capri like style for his son so they soon became shorts, still just as cute.

Not much in my creative space this week due to my sewing room being pulled apart to get to the leaky sprinkler pipes. All is fixed and hopefully I'll be back in there shortly. I have found a few moments for some creativity.

Learning how to lace knit, still working at it, going on my third attempt.


Discovering vintage crochet books from my grandmother. I may learn yet.

This week has been more about milestones and reflections than crafting. My oldest daughter is onto kindergarten in the fall and it's made me realize how short this time is I have with them.I picked up these great little prose booklets from the early 1900's filled with great little quotes and sayings. Perfect for moments of quiet reflection. Plus I am in love with the craftsmen style covers.I have had a pattern in the works this week, mostly in my head, but I've started writing it down, playing with fabric and getting the kinks worked out. Hopefully I'll have more to show soon. Thanks for all who gave support on the undies, I'm hoping to have a completed pair to show next week!

My sister-in-law came to visit this past weekend so my sewing room has been a bit neglected. I was able to start on a few things this week though.
I ripped apart a pair of my son's undies to base my pattern off of. Thank you all for the suggestions! I think this will work much better.

Do you ever have one of those weeks where your seam ripper is your best friend? That's how my week has been in the sewing department. There were shorts made and ripped out more times than I want to count, unsuccessful underwear making, and experimental free motion quilting. This all adds up to a couple dents in the old ego. Luckily, I have a very supportive husband who encourages me to keep going, keep learning and keep trying.
Some much needed quilting practice.
I "tried" to make some underwear for my overly skinny son. If anyone knows of a boys underwear pattern please let me know. The vintage girls one did not do the trick.
